Wimbledon 2007

Posted at 06:47 on 2007-Jun-27
Wimbledon is here again then! I love this tournament - I don't really get to follow tennis at any other time of the year so I look forward to it. I usually go to Wimbledon most years but not this time. I don't mind though; I will still enjoy watching it on the TV. I can't see myself getting much studying done for the next couple of weeks but nevermind! At the moment we're waiting for Henman's 2nd round match but it's rained off; ah the glorious British weather! I think the new retractable centre court roof which will be operative from 2009 will be a great addition to the tournament. There is a camp who argues that the rain delays are part and parcel of Wimbledon, and yes I can see what they mean from a traditional or sentimental viewpoint, but there's no getting away from the fact that they're also a pain. We've got partial sun here now (and we're about 10 miles away from the grounds) so maybe there'll be some play soon. I think the weather usually drifts from us towards Wimbledon.

I'm not sure how much further in the tournament Henman will get as he's fairly lowly ranked now. It can't be denied that Wimbledon does bring out a certain determination in him though; he does better than he should "on paper". I saw Roddick get through to the 3rd round earlier; he played okay but not great. I guess it could be that whole "It's best to not peak too early" thing but I still reckon he has some work to do if he wants to get past the QFs. Jimmy Connors (yep, THAT legend of the game, and Roddick's coach) will be putting him through his paces at practise tomorrow I should think! I would love to see Roddick win the tournament but a certain person called Roger Federer will have something to say about that!

Speaking of Federer, I doubt he will get even remotely tested til about the QFs....if at all! It'll be interesting to see who he plays against in the finals (obviously assuming he gets there but we should pretty much be able to depend on that). I do like watching Federer play; he's such an elegant player. I call him the Silent Assassin 'cause he never makes a noise when he plays; you'll often hear the other players grunting as they strike the ball but not him. He makes it all seem so effortless.

I think the BBC's coverage is amazing; they've got all angles covered with Wimbledon this year. I'm glad I can make use of BBC interactive which lets me select from about 3 or 4 different matches (rather than whatever they choose to show on the 2 main BBC channels). The BBC's internet minisite is ace as well; minute by minute updates throughout the day on what's going on round the grounds and general interesting tidbits of information. Then of course, you have the experts in the studio chatting away to Sue Barker (BBC presenter and ex pro tennis player). They really have their work cut out when there's a rain delay - they have a lot of "filling" time. My favourite pundit to listen to is John MacEnroe - that guy is so entertaining and knowledgeable.

Anyway that's my TV viewing sorted for the next couple of weeks! Hope you're all enjoying it (if that's your thing of course)! :)
